Guide to Oasis Live Concert Films and Documentaries

Guide to Oasis Live Concert Films and Documentaries

Now that they’ve announced their reunion, and many of us have got tickets, we’ll probably spend the winter streaming old Oasis live shows or documentaries and dreaming of the summer right? Just us? Surely not…

Well read on if you want some help working out what official recordings are out there, which ones you want to watch and where you can access them. They are spread over different streaming services for now, some are a bit harder to find but can still be bought on DVD or Blu-ray if you can track them down.

Oasis Live Concert Films

Live By The Sea

Year of Gig: 1995

Streaming Links: Apple TV (with subscription), Prime Video (with subscription), Google TV (to buy).

Trailer:

Originally Released on: DVD and VHS. The DVD is available at Amazon at quite a reasonable price.

This is proper old school Oasis, a full indoor live gig from Southend in early 1995. It captures the youthful energy of the band before they became absolutely huge, with ‘Some Might Say’ as the only post-Definitely Maybe song. There’s loads of b-sides performed, and Liam’s voice sounds incredible. It’s the rawest version of them you’ll get on any of these films.

Tracklist:

  1. Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
  2. Columbia
  3. Digsy’s Dinner
  4. Some Might Say
  5. Live Forever
  6. Up In The Sky
  7. Acquiesce
  8. Headshrinker
  9. It’s Good To Be Free
  10. Cigarettes & Alcohol
  11. Married With Children
  12. Sad Song
  13. D’yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?
  14. Talk Tonight
  15. Slide Away
  16. Supersonic
  17. I Am The Walrus

There and Then

Year of Gig: 1996

Streaming Links: Prime Video (with subscription), YouTube (to buy), Google TV (to buy).

Originally Released on: DVD and VHS. The DVD is available at Amazon though it’ll set you back over £40.

This captures the band as they were just becoming huge, with the majority of tracks coming from their gig at Man City’s old stadium Maine Road in April 1996, but it does also have a few from Earl’s Court in London at the end of 1995. Being a bit later this includes What’s the Story songs, and less B-sides than Live by the Sea.

The concert is interspersed with interviews, and shows just how mad the atmosphere had gone for the band. Everyone jumping around to The Swamp Song, an instrumental, is crazy to us in 2024 when everyone is on their phones.

Their cover of Cum on Feel the Noize by Slade is amazing, worth tracking down on Spotify on the Don’t Look Back in Anger single, though this live version is something I’d love to see.

Tracklist:

Knebworth 1996

Year of Gig: 1996

Streaming Links: None

Originally Released on: DVD and Blu-ray

The most recent film release, only coming out in 2022. There was a DVD and Blu-ray release which included a brilliant documentary film, along with additional discs with full recordings of both nights from the Knebworth 1996 shows. I can’t believe these recordings sat in the archives for so long!

The official store has various packages here, including a CD/DVD package featuring the documentary but not the live show, and a DVD set which includes both the documentary and the DVD with both nights.

The documentary is well worth a watch if you haven’t already seen it, it tells the full story of Knebworth in a very cinematic way, from the perspective of fans looking back interspersed with new interviews with the band and archive footage of the days.

This is probably early Oasis at their best, it all sounds massive.

The Blu-ray is nowhere to be found, which is a shame as that’s the version I’ve got and it’s the best way to watch it. Worth tracking down if you can find it.

Audio recording

Also, there is an audio version on Spotify, Apple Music etc which sounds incredible. The vinyl is great too.

Familiar to Millions

Year of Gig: 2000

Streaming Links: Prime Video (with subscription), YouTube (to buy), Google (to buy), Apple TV (to buy)

Originally Released on: DVD and VHS

If you want to watch Oasis at the old Wembley before they knocked it down, then this one’s for you. It doesn’t sound like the band was particularly happy at this time from the stories of the night that wasn’t filmed, but the concert film is a good one, showcasing songs from the Standing on the Shoulder of Giants era and older classics.

Personally, not my favourite of these but it’s worth watching to see the old Wembley more than anything else.

There is a documentary on the DVD version if you can track it down, which I’ve never watched but may have to try to get hold of it.

Not sure on the tracklist, there are a few different versions! The Wikipedia page gives an idea of what is on there.

Audio recording

This is another with audio available on streaming platforms, though it doesn’t sound brilliant so I’d put that one to the bottom of the list.

Live at the City of Manchester Stadium

Year of Concert: 2005

Streaming Links: Apple TV (with subscription)

Originally Released on: DVD and Blu Ray

Now this is my favourite one, as it’s filmed in great quality and takes in the Don’t Believe The Truth tracks. This was the year I first saw them so has great memories attached, it’s probably different if you were around in the 90s.

Originally this was disc 2 alongside a DVD called Lord Don’t Slow Me Down, which was a documentary of the 2005 tour. I watched both more times than is healthy when it first came out, and will be revisiting it again soon.

If you can track down a decent priced version of the DVD I’d highly recommend it, the documentary is hilarious, but if not then you’ve got to watch the concert film on Apple TV if you have it.

Honestly, this is more like the Oasis you’ll see on tour next year than those earlier concert films. A lot more polished.

Tracklisting:

10 Years of Noise and Confusion: Live at Barrowlands

Year of Concert: 2001

Streaming Links: Apple TV (with subscription), Prime Video (with subscription or to buy)

This is a really interesting one as its Oasis when they were massive, but in a really intimate setting. It’s a high energy show and the setlist is amazing too, with a rare performance She’s Electric.

Tracklist

  1. Go Let It Out
  2. Columbia
  3. Morning Glory
  4. Acquiesce
  5. Supersonic
  6. Fade Away
  7. Half The World Away
  8. Whatever
  9. The Masterplan
  10. Slide Away
  11. She’s Electric
  12. Champagne Supernova
  13. Rock ‘N’ Roll Star

Standing on the Edge of the Noise

Year of Concert: 2008

Originally released on: Digital only

Streaming Links: Prime Video (with subscription), Apple TV (to buy), YouTube (to buy)

A slightly different one, where it’s the band playing in their rehearsal space to 100 people. It’s the latest Oasis official recording and the only one with Dig Out Your Soul songs on, of which there are quite a few on there. Personally, I still haven’t seen this one but the tracklist looks good:

Tracklist:

  1. Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
  2. The Shock of the Lightning
  3. To Be Where There’s Life
  4. Waiting for the Rapture
  5. The Masterplan
  6. Songbird
  7. Slide Away
  8. Ain’t Got Nothin’
  9. The Importance of Being Idle
  10. I’m Outta Time
  11. Supersonic
  12. Don’t Look Back in Anger
  13. Falling Down

Oasis Documentaries

There are a fair few Oasis documentaries about, made at various times. We’ve already mentioned Lord Don’t Slow Me Down, accompanying the Live at City of Manchester Stadium show on a DVD you’ll need to track down, Familiar to Millions DVD if you can get hold of it, and Knebworth, which can be found on DVD on the official store.

All documentaries are worth watching just because they’re both so funny, there are some great stories and loads of cool footage in each of them.

Supersonic

This is the obvious one, the movie that was released that tells the definitive story of the band. If you watch one Oasis documentary, make it this one.

Where can you stream it? At the moment, nowhere without paying, but it’s totally worth it. Prime TV (to buy), Google (to buy), Apple TV (to buy)

The DVD isn’t too expensive on HMV or Amazon but I guess the streaming will be better quality unless you come across the Blu-ray.

Also, if you really want to delve into the history of the band, the accompanying Supersonic book brings together all of the interviews used to make the film. It’s a great read and reasonably priced.

There We Were, Now Here We Are… The Making of Oasis

This was a documentary released for the 10th Anniversary of Definitely Maybe on the DVD back in 2004. It focuses much more on the early days, with loads of very early footage. This is the contents of the DVD if you can track it down:

The documentary itself is currently on Prime Video as part of your subscription, or can be purchased on Youtube or Apple.

Liam Gallagher Documentaries

There were two Liam Gallagher documentaries over the past few years:

As it Was

This was a really in-depth one that looked at what he did between Oasis and the start of his solo career, and followed his rise back to larger venues. Loads of cool footage of him with his family, though no footage of him performing Oasis songs.

It’s not on any streaming services, but you can buy it on YouTube, Google, Apple or Prime Video. The Blu-ray is on HMV at not much more if you want a physical copy.

Knebworth 2022

It’s been a bit confusing where you can get hold of this documentary. There was also a live film, and I’ve seen some great videos from these shows, but it’s all a bit hard to get hold of. It’s not even available to buy from anywhere right now since being taken off Paramount+, and never got a DVD release. We watched it and it was great, so hopefully it surfaces sometime.

His Knebworth 2022 live album is available too, on either streaming or vinyl/CD and his voice sounds so good. Its down to a pretty reasonable £35 now for the 3LP vinyl.

Noel Gallagher Live Films and documentaries

Weirdly, Noel hasn’t done a concert film since his first solo tour, though there are a few good little interviews with him, and his YouTube channel has some great stuff including The Making of Council Skies

Once in a Lifetime Sessions with Noel Gallagher

Included on Prime Video is an hour long interview/session with Noel from 2022 looking back on his whole career, which is worth watching, as are most interviews he’s done!

Noel Gallagher Out of the Now

If you’ve got Sky, there’s an interview and 12 track set from Noel talking about his first 10 years with the High Flying Birds

https://www.sky.com/watch/title/programme/f325fcd7-b223-4 977-b441-36597abcdff8/noel-gallagher-out-of-the-now-f325fcd7-b223-4977-b441-36597abcdff8

International Magic: Live at the O2

Back in 2012 Noel released a concert film from the O2 Arena, which included him performing tracks from his first album and select Oasis songs. There is an additional 8 track acoustic set, and a 6 track performance from the NME Awards that year. Great value package and even better, it comes with a CD that includes all the demos from the first High Flying Birds album.

It’s available on Amazon now, at least on the marketplace. If you enjoyed Noel’s solo stuff, this is worth getting hold of. The Blu-ray will be better quality of course.

Live albums

Streaming services have some live albums, all with different versions of Oasis tracks from over the years. These should help us get in the mood over the coming months:

  • Oasis: Knebworth 1996
  • Oasis: Familiar to Millions (from Wembley 2000)
  • Liam Gallagher: Knebworth 2022
  • Liam Gallagher: MTV Unplugged
  • Liam Gallagher: Live from Down by the River Thames
  • Liam Gallagher: Acoustic Sessions
  • Noel Gallagher: The Dreams We Have as Children (some incredible acoustic versions of Oasis songs)

It’s also worth checking out Noel’s Abbey Road session, which includes great recent versions of Going Nowhere and The Masterplan, which could make it onto the setlist

Oasis Live Spotify Playlist

There are also some random live b-sides hidden away in the Singles listings. I’ve put together a Spotify playlist of all Oasis live tracks for anyone who’s interested.
